Dec 10

Yesterday we had a substitute teacher for the morning.  Mrs. Young was doing individual assessments with individual children.  We were very respectful.  We started with quiet reading.  We did calendar and we practiced counting in different ways.  We had literacy centers.  We wrote at least three sentences in our journals by sounding out words.  We did mindfulness and we practiced our letters and sounds.  In math we continued doing  the math assessments.  We tried to figure out where a number falls on a number line and we did some quick adding and subtracting sentences.  In Social Studies we stated talking about our community and the things that are in it.  Our homework is to look around our community (while we are in the car or walking to and from school) to see what we can see.

Today we started with quiet reading..  We did our word review. I forgot to hand the word reviews out at the end of the day (sorry).  I will hand them our on Monday.  Some children in Group A had difficulty with the word "the".  Please practice this word at home.  We had gym.  We had music with Mr. Weins.  We did calendar and we had literacy centers.  Today we worked on the letter J.  We practiced the sound it makes and we brainstormed words that begin with J.  We practiced printing it on our whiteboards and in our printing books.  We drew and labelled pictures that start with J.  Some of us wrote sentences with J words in them.

We have added 2 more December Spirit Days (for a total of 3).  They are:

Wednesday Dec 15th - Pyjama/Stuffie Day.  Children may wear their pyjamas and bring a stuffie.  Please make sure that the stuffie is small enough to fit in their backpack.
Thursday Dec 16th - Plaid Day - Wear anything plaid to school to get in that lumber jack winter vibe.
Friday Dec 17th - Winter break themed - ugly winter break sweaters - dress festive for the start of the holidays!

With the holiday season soon approaching it's important to care for others and give back to those who are less fortunate than us.  This holiday season, Beddington Heights School will be a part of 2 programs that the city of Calgary runs for those less fortunate.
The first program is Loonies for Lunches.  Loonies for Lunches would bring students together to collect loonies to donate to the food bank.  The loonies will be used by the Food Bank to purchase food for our Weekends and More program that makes sure kids get the nutritious food they need on the weekends to stay healthy and learning.
The Mayor's Food Drive is where we collect non-perishable items, i.e. can goods, sealed boxed items, for Calgary's Food Bank.  Both programs start this Monday to Dec 14th.
