Sept. 1

 Welcome to Grade One!

We had a busy first day of school.  Once we got inside the school we found our coat hooks and hung up our jackets.  Inside the classroom we found our desks and played with play dough.  We got settled and we talked about some of the rules in our classroom.  We did calendar.  We will do this everyday.  We learned a "Days of the Week" song as well as a "Months of the Year" song.  We learned how to say/find the date.  We looked at a weather website to see the temperature and weather.  We will keep track of the weather everyday and at the end of the month we will graph it.  We are also keeping track of how many days we have been in school.  This helps us learn numbers and place value.  Everyday we will practice a math skill during our calendar time.  Today we practiced making patterns.   We went outside for recess.  During snack we listened to a story.  We did a writing activity in our our journals.  We copied "My name is" from the board then we finished the sentence.  We drew a picture of ourselves doing something in the summer.  After lunch we chose 10 books for our book bins.  We will keep the same books for a week and then change them.  We had gym.  We wrote as many numbers as we could on a 100 chart.  After recess some of us were hungry.  If we had anything left over in our lunch bags we had a little snack.  We listened to a story called "Harlie Doodle Dog - Find Your Calm".  It gave us ideas of strategies to use when we are upset.  We decorated cards for our coat hooks.

Many of us were very tired in the afternoon.  We may need to go to bed early tonight (I know I will!)

 Yesterday we started with quiet reading.  We changed our library books.  We did calendar and we practiced adding and subtracting.  We learned about the letter W.  We talked about the sound it makes and we brainstormed words that start with W.  We practiced printing it on our whiteboards and in our printing books.  We drew and labelled pictures that start with W and some of us wrote sentences that have W words in it.  Yesterday we started by watching a Alphablocks video.  We did calendar and we practiced drawing shapes.  We counted the sides and vertices of the shapes.  We did literacy centers.  We had indoor recess since it was so cold outside.  We learned about the letter C.  We talked about the 2 sounds it makes and we brainstormed words that begin with C.  We practiced printing it on our whiteboards and in our printing books.  We drew and labelled pictures and some of us wrote sentences with C words in them.  After lunch we finished our C work.  We played floor hockey in gym and we had another indoor recess.  We wrote our numbers as high as we can go (or filled in missing numbers if we can write our numbers correctly to 100).  We did Mathletics and Raz Kids on the iPads. Yesterday we started with quiet reading and we changed our library books (we keep them in our desk).  We had music with Mr. Weins.  We did calendar and we practiced making numbers using ones blocks and tens rods.  We Filled in missing words in our Fall Changes book.   We used our poems to help us spell the words.  We did mindfulness and we practiced our sounds by doing our gumball activity.  In gym we used scooters.  We worked on the number 11.  We got out 11 blocks and we used them to make different number sentences (e.g. 5+6=11).  We practiced printing it and we showed different ways that we can represent 11.  We started talking about our families today.  We shared things we like to do with our family.
